pickingupbrass_cover

Mike Dawson spent an hour with Charlie Bell the co-author of a brilliant new book called “Picking up the brass”  A hillarious look at life in the forces when you aint Andy McNabb.  A collection of anecdotes and half truths are put together into the story of a young Manchester lad called Eddy Nugent who almost falls into army life.

Charlie tells some of the truths behind the writing of the book as well as some inside information about life in the regular army.

If your thinking of joining up read this book first.  Click below to hear the full interview.

Keep listening to the show as we will be giving away a copy of the book to one lucky listener.  If you can’t wait that long then click here and buy your own copy now

2 legs good, 4 legs better.

What a great afternoon we had last week when we visited the animal sanctuary in Wilmslow.  Since the 1920′s they have been providing protection for animals of all shapes, sizes and personalities.  They provide safe long term accommodation for horses, donkeys as well as a lovely pot belly pig.  They have lots of domestic pets too who are desperate for re-homing.  Many are older retired cats who are looking for the quiet life in their later years.  The Humane Education Society are also committed to spreading compassion for animals with young people and adults in the belief that this will pass on to our compassion for each other.  For that reason you are all most welcome to go along and just visit the animals free of charge.  We will be putting the photo’s from the day on our website soon.  All this fantastic work is done by a committed team of staff and volunteers and is funded by voluntary donations.  You can register as a friend and pay a tiny amount on a monthly basis or just pop down wth a few tins of cat food.  They will have a website online soon and of course links here but in the meantime if you can provide a quiet home for a retired cat or you just want to pop down and say hello then you will be most welcome.  They are just past the boddington arms heading into Wilmslow.  You can call them on 01625 520802.

David Kavanan is one of the committee members who showed Mike Dawson around the site.

Who let the dogs out? Reward increased!

Fantastic news all round!  During the show a listener who owns a micro chipping company rang up and offered to increase the reward by £100.00.  Linton explained on the show how micro chipping increases your chances of getting your pet back to 99%.  You can find out more at  www.microchipmydog.co.uk

Within 24 hours of the show we had a phone call to say that Tory had returned home.  She is safe and well but no doubt missing her little boy. Really encouraging now as we search for Brosie.  We are attempting to spread the search further afield in the hope he has been rescued by some well meaning people from out of the area.  We need your help!!   Please click on the poster link where you can print a poster to put up in your butty shop, school or car window.   Just go to the latest news page of our website at www.gsfcuk.com or click below.

Garron Frith coming in soon.

An almost regular guest on the show and brilliant musician Garron Frith will be back on the show with us on October 11th.

Not to be missed and always a favourite sure to be playing one or two songs from his last album.  We also managed to catch him doing some street busking in Chorlton just for the hell of it.  There’s no accounting for the sound quality when recorded and filmed in the street but here he is.
