Prior to the Popes proposed visit to the U.K. later this year he has upset some sections of the Christian community with his alleged intervention into political policy. Pope Benedict addressed Bishops of England and Wales on 1st February exhorting them to oppose the equality bill which seeks to bring together various strands of legislation which will ensure greater protection and equal treatment for women and LGBT people among others. The Pope has said that the Bill contravenes ‘natural law’ and discriminates against Christians who do not agree that homosexuality is part of God’s natural order. The Lesbian & Gay Christian movement have denounced the popes comments and have refered to his own record on equality and any role he had in the cover up of abuse scandals in his own country. They dispute whether his visit should be funded by the taxpayer at all. LGCM rejects the Pope’s comments and reaffirms its own commitment to equality and fairness for all, both inside and outside of the churches and other faith-based organisations. Mike Dawson spoke to Sharon from LGCM about the enomolies this throws up for Lesbian & Gay Christians who want to be part of a church that is rejecting them.
